Spirit Warriors
By Ashley Thorpe

Review by Isobel, Year 7, Thomas Telford School
Spirit Warriors by Ashley Thorpe is set in a magical alternate version of the 1960s. I think this makes the book more interesting because it’s like a time machine allowing the reader to feel and understand what it was like in the past. My favourite character was probably Evie because she stood up for what was right and she showed that people can have more power than they believe, but my least favourite character was probably the cat, as they weren’t that important in the plot of the book. After reading the book I learnt how people would do different tasks without technology and how their life would have been. I loved how the author built tension, making the plot captivating and keeping me on the edge of my seat. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a quick-paced book filled with mystery and interesting, powerful characters. From reading this book I learnt that La Diablesse is actually a renowned figure in Caribbean folklore and not just an interesting book character. Overall, this is a captivating book filled with power and is definitely worth the time to read.
Review by Esme Year 8 Ashcroft Technology Academy
This book is set in 1953 in Accompong Town, Xaymaca. It is based on the British colonisation of Jamaica but with a magical feature. The character of Cai shows the pain of people when loved ones were lost which was a moving plotline. So, I would recommend this book for people who love reading emotional stories. Overall it was an enjoyable book to read.
