This was an excellent book that I really enjoyed reading. I love the way that the author demonstrates the history in the story line through the letters between Mary and Ruby and how this shows the real life behind slavery back then. Also reflecting how some enslaved people get away and some don't, showing how bad life was there and even the punishment for if you get caught shows that it must have been like hell there.
Also, Clover was amazing. It was such a joy to read her ups and downs throughout the story and when she meets her grandma and gets more letters to see what has happened with Mary and her determination to do so is absolutely brilliant! As well as when she finds Catrina and eventually gets her and her uncle help is so heart-warming that she wanted to help.
My favourite part was when Mary ran away. Even reading it and picturing it in my mind ran adrenalin through my body, almost like I was in her situation. Also, Clover’s connection with her Mum and Dad and her good and bad memories about them really showed how hard of a start she had to life
I overall loved it; I thought that it was really clever to add in the history of it through the letters and it’s a very unique thing to do.

The book searching for a remarkable thing was set around the time of slavery and how Clover learnt about slavery in Jamaica. My favourite character is her dad because he tried so hard to connect with her and even took her out for a trip for bonding. I learnt a lot about slavery around 1851.The story was quite sad because Clover’s mom died and her dad who left her at a very young age came back after the death of her mother. What stands out for me is that the mom hid a lot of things from her and she began to know it through the letter after the mom died. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn a lot about slavery in the past.
