Berlin is a microcosm of twentieth century European history; a city that still bears many of the signs and scars of its experiences and upheavals. It is a must for any history department teaching the Modern World, taking history out of the textbooks and breathing life into it. All pupils benefit from walking through history. Ideally, one would take in Berlin chronologically, spending a day on the Weimar Republic, a day on the Nazi regime and moving on to the post-War settlement and then Cold War. However Berlin is not laid out in neat periods of time, therefore your visit is dependent on coaches, hotels and where the Germans built things.
