Seán Lang argues that whilst history teachers have expressed much support for the citizenship education proposals, and whilst their practice already addresses the skills of evidence-weighing, debate and argument, there are huge gaps in our coverage of relevant content. He argues that the freedom with which teachers may currently interpret National Curriculum requirements and the narrowing down of choices at GCSE and A Level have led to the hiding of important stories of democracy. Dictatorship sells. Horror wins. Instead, Lang argues that history teacher's experience of using simulations and debate should be built upon to make democracy understandable and fascinating. He outlines areas that teachers could and should address, and that current curriculum arrangements will allow.
