Editor's note The Place, Time and Society 8-13 Project was established in 1971 ‘to explore the problems of the part of the curriculum for children aged 8-13 which is related to the subject-areas of history, geography and the social sciences' (Blyth, 1975, p, 5). It produced an approach based on teaching for concepts within an overall objectives framework. The project provided detailed, but not prescriptive guidance for teachers.

It emphasised the relationship of the research-based academic disciplines of Geography, History and Social Sciences to the school subjects history, geography and those of social sciences. This served as the basis for planning guidance - key extracts from the project's 1975 planning booklet (Blyth, 1975) are produced below.
