Beginner History Teacher Programme

Autumn 2026 cohort

  • Welcome meeting: Tuesday 20 October, 4.30–5.30pm
  • Second meeting: Tuesday 24 November, 4.30–5.30pm
  • Final meeting: Tuesday 15 December, 4.30–5.30pm

The Beginner History Teacher Programme introduces you to the fundamentals of history teaching, sharing the collective wisdom of history practitioners. You will become a part of a cohort of fellow history teachers and join the course leaders for three online meetings to discuss the principles of history teaching and the implications for your practice. You will be asked to submit reflections on your reading before the final meeting in order to be certificated.

  • How is the programme structured and delivered?

    Participants will:

    • • Engage with selected HA reading and films
    • • Complete guided reflection questions
    • • Submit reflections in advance
    • • Attend three live online seminar-style workshops
    • • Receive certification upon completion
  • What content will the programme cover?

    Module 1: Explaining and describing change

    Cause and consequence; change and continuity

    Module 2: Making historical judgements

    Similarity and difference; significance

    Module 3: Thinking with evidence

    Using evidence and sources; historical interpretations

    Each module will combine independent engagement with HA materials and a one-hour live seminar shaped around participant reflections.

  • Who is the programme for?

    • • Teachers from accelerated training routes with limited subject pedagogy input
    • • Independent school teachers without formal training
    • • Early career teachers whose training was disrupted (e.g. COVID cohorts)
    • • Teachers trained overseas unfamiliar with the UK disciplinary tradition
    • • Teachers who are returning after a career break and want a gentle reintroduction to history teaching pedagogy but don’t feel ready to tackle the History Teacher Development Programme
    • • Teachers in SEND settings delivering history without specialist training
  • Why should I take part?

    This programme will share the collective wisdom of history teachers regarding:

    • • Understanding core historical second-order concepts, including: change and continuity; cause and consequence; significance; similarity and difference; and evidence and interpretations.
    • • Addressing frequent pupil and teacher misconceptions relating to these concepts.
    • • Gaining some practical classroom strategy ideas and approaches that can be used to teach historical concepts.
  • Who is leading this programme?

    Ruth Lingard, FHA is a PGCE Tutor for History at the University of York as well as a Head of History. She a strong interest in teaching a more representative history to her students and coordinates YorkClio, the network for History teachers in York and the surrounding area. A former member of the HA Secondary Committee, she has written and presented extensively on history education, including for Teaching History.

    Dan Nuttall is the PGCE Curriculum Leader at the University of York. He has over twenty years' experience in the history classroom, including departmental leadership. He has also presented and written on history teaching widely, including writing for Teaching History in addition to textbook authorship.

  • How do I take part?

    The programme is charged at £108 for HA members and £164.40 for non-members (inclusive of VAT). Payment is available by card only.
