A portrait of the teaching of the British Empire, migration and belonging in English secondary schools

A research project from IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society and the University of Oxford’s Department of Education

Is the British Empire taught about at your school?

If you work – or have recently worked – in an English secondary education setting, the research team at A portrait of the teaching of the British Empire, migration and belonging in English secondary schools wants to hear from you.

They are conducting a national survey, the first of its kind in England. Both teachers and students have asked for more attention to be paid to teaching and learning about the British Empire and its enduring legacies, but very little is known about what is already happening in schools.

Whether or not you have firsthand experience in this area, this is an important opportunity to share your ideas and perspectives. Your input will help produce a robust and comprehensive research evidence-base that can reliably guide future programmes of professional development support.
