A values exercise related to trench warfare

This lesson has worked well with higher ability whole classes and with smaller groups with Special Educational Needs. It is essentially a citizenship exercise. It encourages pupils to explore their own values, to justify these values through argument and, through discussion, to understand and accept that others might hold different values. With smaller groups of SEN pupils it has been incredibly useful. I sat for an hour with three such pupils, joining in the debate and listening to their discussion. The stimulus for the activity involved reflection on what First World War soldiers were prepared to fight and to die for.
