Lecture: The doctor’s garden

Annual Conference Podcast 2019

By Dr Clare Hickman, published 14th June 2019

Botanic and agricultural enquiry

The late Georgian British garden was a place of botanic and agricultural enquiry as much as a place of pleasure and leisure. This talk will highlight this use of gardens by medical practitioners. As a group of men who had access to botanical training and, for those at the top end of the profession at least, a reasonable disposable income, medical practitioners were ideally placed to capitalise on the fashion for botanical collecting and agricultural experimentation.

This lecture took place at the Historical Association Annual Conference in May 2019.  Listen to the podcast below.
