We will explore the work and influence of the famous novelist to illuminate our understanding of the Georgian era and the society that Austen brought to life.

Dr Pennel will take us through the reality of the domestic life of people living in the age of Jane Austen. Providing us with a peek behind the kitchen door into the world of hard work to make food and economies last and helping us understand just how realistic those monthly bills and expenses were for the different classes of Georgian England.

In this session we will discuss a number of thoughts about Austen's writings, including: what they tell us about the time she was living in; why her writing stood out then; why her books continue to speak to new generations on men and women; and how her language and choice of stories reveals so much about life at the time and the interactions of people throughout the following centuries.
'I am... MAD': The life in Jane Austen's letters
14 July | Dr Freya Johnston
In this talk one of the leading experts on Jane Austen will explore Austen's life, thoughts and views as expressed through her letters. Find out what she really thought about herself, her family and the world around her, from her own words by someone who has spent years examining the significance and importance of Jane Austen as a writer and female communicator of her time.
The Social Spread of the Handshake in the Age of Jane Austen
22 July | Professor Penelope Corfield
In this talk one of the foremost scholars of Georgian England will provide a fascinating insight to the lives of the people of Georgian England. Referencing the writings of Austen she will explore the development of social habits, attitudes and customs examining in detail some of the ways that Georgian life has filtered through to behaviours and ideas today.
All sessions will take place from 5–6.30pm and will be hosted online via Zoom.
