Teaching local history through a family

By Tim Lomas, published 14th March 2019

The aim of this article is to teach local history through the prism of a local family. History is primarily about people. Using a family who lived in the locality over a large number of years, especially if they impacted considerably on that locality, can help develop an understanding of why things happened in the area and what changes occurred over a number of years. While people and families can be covered in Key Stage 1, the emphasis of this article is on Key Stage 2 and particularly how local history can be linked to the post-1066 unit.
