By Jacqui Dean, published 8th December 2010

Please note: this lesson was produced as part of the Nuffield Primary History project (1991-2009) and pre-dates the 2014 National Curriculum. It is part of a full sequence of lessons available here.

Enactive learning - a Viking trading game to help children understand the full variety of Viking life and culture. They were so much more than the 'vicious Vikings' stereotype.

Aims are for children to:

  • learn about the goods traded by the Vikings and the extent of their trading network across Europe and beyond
  • appreciate enactively (kinaesthetically) the patterns and processes of Viking trade
  • understand where the Vikings fitted in chronologically.

Download the teachers' notes and resources. Instructions to pupils includes information about the goods each Viking group has to trade.
