Teaching history and politics in an international school in Beijing, Andrew Carey found himself in a position to reflect on the teaching of citizenship in schools, particularly the concepts involved in global citizenship. He describes how global citizenship is integrated into schemes of work for a concept-based humanities course in Years 7 and 8, and in history lessons during Year 9. Carey shows how English traditions of citizenship education, including the intrinsic connections with history developed by some history teachers, have informed his department’s work on global citizenship.
