Report on Reclaiming Women’s Place in the History Curriculum

End Sexism in Schools research report

Congratulations to the team behind the new report The Great History Heist: Reclaiming Women’s Place in the History Curriculum.

The publication of some of the outcomes from the report in The Guardian has brought to public attention the important evidence that despite being at least 50% of the population, women are not covered, addressed or even mentioned within History lessons with anything like the regularity that men are. The actions, contributions, experiences and names of women from across society and throughout history are marginalised in favour of the male voice and experience.

Their research reinforces many of the findings of our annual surveys, curriculum research and published articles from the last twenty years, which is satisfying that we are all reaching the same conclusions, but frustrating that despite that nothing is changing through official channels.

We would echo their call for a curriculum that is representative of all our histories and have been actively working with exam boards to extend this to GCSE and beyond.

To support their drive for change we have opened access to a few of our articles and resources on women's voices in history so that they can inspire educators and remind others how to include women of the past in the classroom of the present. To the many who are already trying to make these changes and to spread these messages, we will continue to support and publicise your efforts.
