Well done to all those getting their exam results today!

Whether it is A-levels, T-levels, BTEC, or something similar, congratulations – you have achieved another milestone and hopefully it is one that sets you on to your next path. All of these exams are an opportunity to help frame your next steps in life – however, they are not the only way to frame it, so if your results are not quite what you wanted do not despair: there are other ways to achieve your dreams.

If, however, these are exactly the results you wanted then breathe easily and relax and take a moment to pat yourself on the back and look forward to what you want to do next.

For those of you who have studied history – an extra well done and we hope this leads to either further historical study or at least a lifelong interest in the subject. If it is the former, we have advice on our student pages about what might be expected at university as well as subject knowledge articles. Do look at our membership offers and check out our journals in your University and college libraries. We also have advice on a range of careers that studying history can open up to you. 

If this is now an end to your formal historical study for a while (never say never) then the Historical Association will always be here for your general interest and recreational history.

History teachers – congratulations on getting your students this far! We know how hard you work and we will continue to support you through the many teaching resources and opportunities that we provide for CPD. Do make sure you use your membership with us fully!

And finally, for all those of you who supported those getting their results today – a very well done and you can now relax from the hand-wringing (until next time).

After all that – breathe deeply everyone, sit in the sun, read a book or why not listen to an HA podcast or two?

Analysis of results

The overall picture is positive in terms of history entries and results this year. The big news is that entries are up by 5% for history from 44,717 in 2025 to 46,960 in 2026. This is set against an overall increase in entries (suggestive of larger cohort) of 2.9% but even so, history still outstrips this.
