A Stocking Full of Spies

Review by Rachel, Age 11, Oliver Goldsmith Primary School
This book links local mysteries to the wider impact of World War II, specifically mentioning the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong and the code breaking centre at Bletchley Park. Pupils would love this book because it includes the main characters May, Nuala, Eric who are praised for their personas. Both May and Nuala are portrayed as neurodivergent. I find May interesting for the humour she brought to dark situations. Her love-hate relationship with her older sister Hazel was interesting because it added a relatable family dynamic to the spy setting.

Review by Ulas, Year 8, Ashcroft Technology Academy
This book is set in WWII around the time Pearl Harbour happens and the US declares war on the Japanese. The story starts with a girl named May and she is a spy and detective. Unfortunately, just before Christmas a bomb falls on her school in the middle of her hockey match. May, along with her best friends Eric and Nuala, go to stay with May’s older sister Hazel at a place called Bletchley Park. Now, this place is not ordinary and in fact has a murder mystery that Hazel’s friend needs help to solve. I enjoyed this book because of its mystery, world building and the inclusion of WWII which I think helped build the story. Personally, I like learning about the war period. However, I felt some of the story was a bit stretched out which lost pace a little bit. However, the overall setting was extremely interesting and I would definitely recommend the book to those readers who have an interest in spies, mystery and WWII. Finally, my favourite character is the main character May as I find her unique amongst the other characters in the story. In summary, this was an amazing read, and I would definitely recommend it to others.
