Lockett and Wilde: The Ghosts of London

Review by Ayo, Year 8, Thomas Telford School
After discovering the truth about her parents, Matilda sets out with a ghostly friend to find out more about them.  As she goes on to find out incriminating truths and unexpected friendships, she encounters other mysteries that all lead up to the big truth that has been hidden from all of the Victorian citizens of London. Lockett and Wilde are truly the most adventurous duo I have ever read about.  They never disappoint with the endless adventures and dramatic turns while defying the expectations of women of Victorian London. I would totally recommend this book for ages 9-12. Clean, cozy, fun.

Review by Vianca, St. Cecilia’s Primary School
This book is about a girl named Matilda Lockett and a ghost called Edar Wilde who had numerous mysteries to solve. Alongside their detective work, the pair also had to help Matila’s aunt with her theatre show. What I like about this book is how the truth unravels. I love the illustrations on every page too. The pictures make the story more imaginative and makes it come to life. This book is set in the Victorian era, but I didn’t really learn much history from it. I wouldn’t want to be living in the Victorian times because I would have to pay to go to school, but I would like to have Matilda’s ability to see ghosts because being able to see ghosts would help me see who is following or watching me and I could ask advice from them. Overall, I would rate this book a 4.5 out of 5. This was one of my favourite historical fiction books this year.
