The Legend of Viking Thunder

Review by Melody, Year 8, Cleethorpes Academy
I really enjoyed reading The Legend of Viking Thunder. I liked how there was time travel to two different parts of history – The 1800’s and the Viking era. I especially enjoyed reading the Viking section as I really like the Vikings, as Viking history is my favourite subject. My favourite character is Emmett. He is a funny, caring, and a very silly uncle and father. I like how he is more laid back than most of the other characters, a lot more determined and struggles a lot more to give up than the others. I also really like his outfit design, as it makes him stand out more from all the other characters (example on page 29, chapter 4). I didn’t particularly like Niels, as he didn’t have much relevance other than once being a time key, being locked out of his own time and melting the Gjallarhorn.

I learnt from this book about skalds in the Viking times, who were story tellers that told legends and true stories. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes Viking history, time travelling and mythical stories/objects and fantasy (traveling through time doors, the Gjallarhorn, etc). The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the fact that Emmet was suddenly (halfway through the story) unable to fully hear time doors when he was literally able to hear them in the beginning. It was a good plot, had a good storyline and was easy to read. I would definitely recommend this to anyone of similar age as me.

Review by Maisie, 12 years old, Archbishop Temple Church of England High School
The time period of this book fascinated me. I love the Viking period and I like learning about their traditions. My favourite character in the book was Rune as they are a bit mischievous and cheeky and I found some of the things that they do really funny. From the book, I learnt that the Gjallarhorn signals Ragnarök (the end of the world). I also learnt many new stories that the Vikings told. I felt that the plot was exciting and thought provoking and at times light-hearted which lifted the mood of the book. I would definitely recommend it to other pupils as it is a perfect balance of factual, exciting and funny.
