Through Iron Eyes: An Anglo-Saxon Adventure
By Victoria Williamson (illustrated by Art Spellman)

Through Iron Eyes is a wonderful book about the Anglo-Saxons. After reading this book, I feel like an Anglo-Saxon because the words the author has used are realistic and make me feel for the characters. The tone of the book was very dark though and this feature made the book way more interesting to read. My favourite part of the book is when the main character had to carry out his punishment chores as this brought home what life would be like as a slave during these times.

I really enjoyed this book because I liked the historical setting and the timeline of events. I found the king especially interesting, as he was shown to be a strong ruler but also a loving father. The pagan rituals were also fascinating, particularly the funeral at the beginning of the story. I would recommend this book to other pupils because it was engaging and full of memorable moments. One of my favourite scenes was when some of the characters played a prank on the prince in the forest. I also thought it was very touching when the king gave his helmet to his son at the end of the book, as it showed their bond and trust.
