Hidden Treasure

Review by Alexia, Age 11, St Andrew's CE Primary
This captivating story has a mixture of history, mystery and adventure.

This is the story of Bo who lives in London next to the River Thames. This book is set in the Victorian era. Bo is a keen mudlarker and one day she finds a precious stone and meets someone called Billy River, and as everything slowly falls into place, another secret emerges. Sometimes you think you know what's going to happen, then the story takes an unexpected turn. Death, concealment and revenge really start to stand out in this exciting book. The character of Miss Crescent was very duplicitous, so maybe you shouldn't always trust teachers. An important moral is that you should always have hope and never give up. This book really shows that. This book is suitable for ages eight plus, but anyone could pick up and read this book, especially anyone who enjoys history, mystery or adventure books. It is exciting all the way through. The bond between Bo and Billy is remarkable, and in some points, you feel as if you are there too. I thought Billy was the most interesting character because he has a very different background to all the people I know. He also always has hope, even when his friends have lost all hope. I didn't like Miss Crescent because I knew somehow from the start she wasn't an ordinary teacher. She was hiding things and telling lies upon lies that never end well. This book really interested to me because we have learned about Victorians in school, but not to this much detail. I had no idea that people had to live like the main characters did, in complete poverty. I learned way more about mudlarking than I knew before I read this marvellous book.

Review by Eshani, Age 9, Oliver Goldsmith Primary School
The book is about a girl named Bo and a boy named Billy. They go off to find a special hidden treasure. I personally love the book because it is mysterious in some parts. I think I would recommend it to age 13 and above. The river plays an important part in the story. I felt that the river in the story is a character in itself.
